What does winter conditions actually mean?

When the first morning frost appears as temperatures dip to below 4°C causing patches of ice to form on the roads, you are certainly at risk. Other signs, such as freezing rain and the first snowfall, should tell you that it may already be too late. Certified winter tyres should already be on your car when the temperature falls to below 7°C.

What about in foreign countries?

Although foreign laws on winter tyres are not uniform across Europe, it is important to comply with the regulation in countries where you plan to drive.

When should you fit winter tyres on your car?

We recommend that you start thinking about fitting winter tyres on your car (or purchasing them) in September because you may have real problems finding some tyre sizes at tyre centres as supplies run short.

Furthermore, new cars are sold with larger tyre sizes as a standard feature and it’s not uncommon to see small city cars with 17” or even 18” rims. It is often hard to find a winter tyre of this size and so you should consider investing in a complete winter wheel kit (rims and tyres) with smaller dimensions. It’s also a good idea to order this kit in advance.

Lastly, every year people rush to the tyre centre with the first snowfall causing long lines and even longer installation times. If you get busy and buy them in September, you’ll have all the time you need to select the best tyres or the appropriate winter wheel kit. You’ll avoid the stress of the mad rush to get them mounted and can more easily request the pick-up service offered by most tyre centres in Luxembourg.

Chains and studded tyres:

In winter you can also get chains for your tyres or have studded tyres mounted. But be aware that the regulation and use of these products are restricted to very specific conditions and may vary from country to country. Find out about these restrictions before you use chains or studs!

Did you know?

Winter tyres are noisier than summer tyres, and this is completely normal. They are built with deeper treads for better grip. Run-flat tyres can also be noisier than standard tyres.
