The BMW C Evolution, a “green” electrically powered model

It is not actually something completely new as the BMW C Evolution is not exactly a new model. In fact, it was unveiled in 2014. However, in the age of alternative and green mobility, it has found its place as an environmentally-friendly form of transport.

Although the C Evolution is an electric version of the BMW C 650 motorcycle, which is sold with an internal combustion engine, it can be regarded as a brand-new model. In fact, the changes required to adapt the C 650 to an electric motor have resulted in a radical redesign of the main frame.

A more than a reasonable range for the C Evolution

The battery casing that replaces the internal combustion engine functions as a frame and has become the key load-bearing element of the chassis. Composed of modules adopted from the BMW I3, the battery output ranges from 8 KWh for the standard version to 11 KWh for the Long-Range version. It requires between 3 and 4 hours to charge, plugged into a household outlet.

Depending on electric motor you choose, you can get a maximum range of 100 to 160 km, which is more than reasonable for this type of electrically powered scooter.

Of course, we wouldn’t want to forget about the safety aspect. Here’s the standard gear we’d recommend for riding an electric scooter:

• Your choice of trousers and footwear.

A comfortable and enjoyable ride driving the handlebars of the BMW C Evolution

The seated riding position on this scooter instead of riding astride is far more comfortable, and the possibility of stretching your legs in a relaxed position is something we truly like. Acceleration speed control is bewilderingly easy and adjusts to the riding mode. Thanks to the battery’s particularly low centre of gravity, the balance and agility of this scooter are decidedly more stable, making road handling far more enjoyable.

Equipped with a fully electric drive train, acceleration is lightning-fast and road handling ideal. The electric motor makes riding stress-free. Comfort and handling were already considered to be the strengths of scooters in general, and this electrically powered version has:

• No vibration,
• No engine heat,
• No fumes, etc.

The disadvantages of a scooter with an internal combustion engine vanish and that’s terrific!

The BMW C Evolution’s riding modes

This electric scooter comes in four riding modes controlled directly from the right handlebar, even while riding:

• Road
• Dynamic
• Sail
• Ecopro

These riding modes are combined with smart energy recovery during braking and acceleration. The range of the scooter depends on the riding mode selected.

What are the disadvantages of the BMW C Evo?

Although eye-catching, this electric scooter is hefty, weighing 275 kg. This has an impact on handling, especially when taking a curve.

Furthermore, the storage space under the saddle is a bit narrow and there’s not enough room for a full-face helmet.

Finally, the Long-Range model will cost you €15,500 after tax, a fairly high price for a scooter.

In conclusion: almost total success

The BMW C Evolution is an ideal form of transport for discovering the pleasures of an electric vehicle. The ride is very smooth and enjoyable, not to mention its ease of movement through traffic. The BMW maxi-scooter is a crowd pleaser and rightly so. We’d even venture to say that it is an enormous success! However, its price range remains very high-end and dampens our enthusiasm a little. But what an enjoyable toy!!!
